Frankfurt on the Oder is located on the western (left) bank of the Oder, separating the city from the Polish city of Slubice.
Founded in the 13th century during Polish rule. The warehouse right was given to the city in 1225 by the Silesian prince Henry I the Bearded. In 1430 he joined the Hanseatic League.
On August 3, 1759, allies from the Seven Years' War - Russians and Austrians - met here; three days before this, the city was occupied by Russian troops [source not specified 721 days].
In the 19th century it played a major role in Prussian trade due to its location between Poznan and Berlin.
The city suffered greatly during World War II and was later rebuilt. After the war, it was divided along the Oder between Germany and Poland (the Polish part of the city on the eastern bank is called Slubice). From 1949 to 1990 it was part of the GDR.
