Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Lodz

It was built in the years 1826–1828, in a classicist form, at the New Market Square, as the Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity. In its original shape, it was similar to the building of the Łodz municipality standing on the opposite side of the street Piotrkowska. The author of the project was Boniface Witkowski. In the 1880s, a decision was initially made to expand the church, but due to the inability to meet the needs of the evangelical community in Lodz, which had become significantly enriched in the meantime, the temple was completely rebuilt in the years 1889–1892 according to the design of Otto Gehlig and Hilary Majewski. The cornerstone laid during the reconstruction on August 7, 1889 was accompanied by a protocol written the day before: The Evangelical Commune in Lodz, and with it the first church, was built in 1826. After 63 years, due to a felt need, the church was rebuilt. The cornerstone for the rebuilt church was laid on July 26 (August 7), 1889, during the reign of Alexander III, Emperor of Russia and King of Poland. The Governor-General of Warsaw was General-Adjutant Hurko, the Governor of Piotrkow - General Komarov, the Police Major of the city of Lodz - Captain Danilczuk, the Mayor of the city - Wl. Pienkowski; – General Superintendent Bishop Ewerth; local pastor Klemens Berthold Rondthaler, his assistant Antoni Rutkowski. Members of the church supervision: L. Meyer, R. Finster, F. Rathe, A. Agather, H. Gehlig, J. Erb, E. Geyer, D. Goltz, G. Bliem. The building committee, in addition to the church supervision, consisted of: K. Klukow, R. Ziegler, J. Kammerer, E. T. Neumann, A. Friedrich, R. Fischer, L. Strauch, F. Kindermann, O. J. Schultz, Ed. Modrow, T. Steigert, J. K. Simchen, A. Wenske, G. Wegner, M. Weigold. The cantor was A. Schwab; church secretary – H. J. Gottschild; sacristan – N. Friese; bell ringer – K. Berner; gravedigger – A. Reinke. The construction plan, according to the design of the builder Otto Gehlig, was prepared by the architect Prokofjew, and the construction was carried out under the supervision of the latter by the mason foreman Stelmachowski. The pastor-deacon of the parish of Saint John R. Schmidt was also present at the laying of the cornerstone. We hope in God that the building begun in faith and Christian love will be and remain a holy place where the Word of God will always be preached just and pure to us and our descendants. God bless you, Amen!
