Piotrkowska Street in Lodz

Piotrkowska Street - a representative street of Lodz, one of the longest shopping streets in Europe, approximately 4.2 km long, running longitudinally in a straight line, between pl. Wolnosci and pl. Independence. From the very beginning, this street was the central axis around which the city developed, and its development spontaneously gave the current shape of its center. Initially, the street was mainly a communication route, but over time it turned into the "city's showcase", a center of entertainment and commerce, where the entire life of the growing industrial agglomeration was concentrated. The street declined significantly after World War II. After 1990, it was renovated and turned into a kind of promenade, which, to a large extent, plays a role similar to the old town square of other cities. The buildings, urban planning, institutions, restaurants, clubs and pubs located near this street create a special atmosphere with a cult character, reaching beyond Lodz. The street is narrower at the beginning (Freedom Square) - 17 meters - and wider in the south (Independence Square) - 26 meters.
