In 1393, the Crusaders built a stone castle on the site of a wooden fortress from the late 13th century. The headquarters of the Teutonic Komturia was located here. From February 21 to April 1, 1807, Napoleon Bonaparte lodged in Ostroda Castle. It was here that the great French emperor decided to rest after the battle of Preussisch-Eylau. This historical event was reflected in many paintings by famous artists and other works of art. An example is the reproduction of the painting “Napoleon Guarantees Pardon for the Residents of Ostroda” exhibited in the Ostroda Museum. March 1807." The painting was painted by the French artist Marie Nicolas Pons-Camus. The original is now in the historical gallery of the palace at Versailles.
