Zielona Gora. Photo guide (Gallery III)

Zielona Gora is known as the Polish capital of wine. In the past, it was the northernmost wine-growing area in Europe. The probable beginnings of the city's winemaking tradition date back to 1150, when settlers from Franconia arrived in Zielona Gora and brought seedlings and skills in growing vines. The first mention of viticulture dates back to 1314. Over time, many vineyards were established in Zielona Gora and the surrounding area. In 1890, vines were cultivated on an area of 1,400 ha. In the interwar period, there were approximately 300 hectares of vineyards in the vicinity of Zielona Gora. During the period of industrialization, seven significant wineries were established in Zielona Gora, including the famous Grempler factory. In 1826, August Grempler, together with two colleagues, founded the first sparkling wine factory in Germany in Zielona Gora. On the basis of this factory, the Lubuska Wytwornia Win was established after 1945, which was liquidated in 1999, thus ending the industrial production of wine in Zielona Gora.
